The Institute of Education Archives, part of UCL Special Collections, holds a wide variety of filmstrips, contained in two main collections, and used in formal educational settings from the 1940s until the rise of school TV in the 1970s and 80s. Over 100 filmstrips and booklets were donated from King Edward VI school in Birmingham, and cover in particular human geography and social history (RefNo: KNG). These filmstrips were produced by organisations including the US War Office, the Daily Mail and Common Ground.
UCL also holds a collection relating to the work of Marian Ray (RefNo: RAY), who produced and sold filmstrips to schools around the world through her company Marian Ray Filmstrips. This rich, seemingly-unique collection includes nearly 200 filmstrips, original artwork, equipment, related books, advertising material, press cuttings and business and distribution information, offering a rare insight into the independent filmstrip business from the 1940s to 1980s.
Both collections are fully catalogued and listed on the archives catalogue.
